Riverboat: The River Raft (Riverboat Series Picture Books, Book 1) is a children’s animal picture book written by Ingo Blum and illustrated by Tanya Maneki. There was once a trio of best friends who liked nothing better than going out on the river in their boat. They were an odd combination for friends: a falcon, a fox and a badger, but they each had their own strengths to bring to their activities together, and they all had a grand time. On one of their trips, they see a baby cow who is lost and needs help. Emma has been left behind. Can the three friends figure out how to help Emma get back to her parents and their herd?
Ingo Blum’s children’s animal picture book, Riverboat, is an enchanting fable about three very different friends who work together to help a baby cow in need. I loved how the three different personalities of Finn, Shylow and Titus are explored and enjoyed seeing them in their element on the river. Tanya Maneki’s illustrations are brilliant! She endows each of the characters with features that mesh perfectly with their personalities, and each brightly colored panel follows the story line quite well. Riverboat is a grand selection for story time, but it’s also well suited for new readers to try on their own. The print is large and non-threatening, and the vocabulary used is simple and will help new readers build confidence in their reading skills. Riverboat: The River Raft is most highly recommended.
