Rocky the Respectful Raccoon and His Red Sunglasses is a children’s picture book by Janet H. Councilman. Rocky the Raccoon lives in Old Oak Woods with other animals. He’s one of the most liked critters because he’s very well mannered, always punctual, caring, and generous. Rocky always shares his toys and never says negative things about his friends. His concern is being born with a black mask on his face. He hates it so much and wishes it would disappear. As he prepares berry pie for Carmen the Cardinal and acorn casserole for Spike the Squirrel to eat on Thanksgiving, Rocky wonders if the red sunglasses he found would hide the mask. But he isn’t prepared for the other animals’ reactions when they meet at the picnic.
I adored this uplifting children’s picture book about Rocky the Respectful Raccoon. It’s such a lovely educational story about the importance of having good manners, learning to say please and thank you, helping others when they need it, and sharing. Janet H. Councilman also focused on how different the animals are, just like humans. Rocky disliked the black mask on his face, yet no one else cared about it because he was nice to be around. The author has written a very touching story that teaches children that it’s all right to be different from others, and how important it is to have good friends who positively influence your life. The illustrations are beautiful too. Rocky the Respectful Raccoon and the Red Sunglasses is a must-read!
