Rough Diamond Rough Justice by Avien Gray is an enthralling crime thriller. We are transported to England of the 1990s and meet two friends – Cain and Jerry. Jerry is a police officer with the Royal Protection Team. Cain is with MI5’s investigative surveillance team. As the upbeat friends are advancing their careers, they are saving for their bucket list of adventures they are planning to enjoy together when they retire. But meanwhile, their careers beckon. Cain finds himself on a mission to unravel a criminal venture of international trafficking of cash, drugs, guns, and girls, and money laundering in the diamond trade. And Jerry is promoted to be a personal bodyguard to a Royal family member. But will Cain accomplish his mission? And how will Cain’s and Jerry’s lives unfold?
James Bond can rest now that Cain has stolen the scene! Avien Gray’s Rough Diamond Rough Justice had that special page-turner edge that made me long for the reunion with Cain once I put the book aside. And now that I’ve finished reading it, I am glad that the ending hints at a sequel. Although I am a cozy crime mystery fan and this novel tends toward a rougher, hardboiled thriller, Cain has won me over. I liked his humor - at times irreverent and at times boyishly naughty, but always witty. The international span of Cain’s mission, covering the UK, the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, China, and South Africa, kept me engrossed with the authentic peculiarities. This suspenseful, fast-moving novel will appeal to fans of crime thrillers.
