Pets can be a great joy in life but also a significant challenge. Adults know that bringing an animal into the home requires love, time, and patience, but how do we teach that to children? So often, we see friends and family members' joy with their pets, utterly unaware of how much time and training went into adapting that loving pet to the home. This leads to unwelcome surprises when a family finally brings a pet home. Rowdy Ronnie is a beautiful children’s book about developing patience and kindness, which gives children a realistic look at the unexpected challenges of pet care and ownership. Shermaine Perry-Knights has created a fantastic tale showing us how Ryan, a little girl wanting a pet rabbit, learns the value of bonding with a pet with a very different personality and how love and patience can help to create the reality that Ryan wants with her fluffy pet.
I loved this story because it reminded me of my experience rescuing a Monck's parakeet nearly nine years ago. I’ve had birds since I was ten, but in my 40s, I faced the challenge of an abused bird in desperate need of rehabilitation. Everything I learned from that experience is captured perfectly in Rowdy Ronnie, and Shermaine Perry-Knights presents it in a way that children will love and understand. I also loved the illustrations by Elena Kisenkova; they are beautiful and bring the story to life. This is an excellent book for children, and I highly recommend it to any parent considering bringing a pet into their home.
