Rustwater by J.G. Macdonald brings wedding photographer Jane Dougherty to a small Arizona town, filling in for her cousin who’s won a prize but can’t attend the ceremony. The first things she sees are the red fountain on Main Street and Greer’s Books & Little Shop of Conspiracies, and then it only gets stranger. The awards ceremony and book signing with a local celebrity author are interrupted by the discovery of a body by the railroad tracks. Meanwhile, Jane and her ex, geologist Clay Harrow, are roped in as guides for two Swiss travelers for a mystery tour in the desert. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and then some. Dealing with natural and unnatural dangers, runaway donkeys, lost supplies, and flash floods, Jane decides that she should have stayed on the highway.
Rustwater is a laugh-aloud guided tour of a small town awash with eccentric characters, conspiracy theorists, and actual wonders. J.G. Macdonald crafts hilarious comedic sequences by juxtaposing unexpected and potentially catastrophic events with the earnestness of the people caught up in them. Her descriptions of the Arizona desert are breathtaking, making the reader want to linger despite the compelling pace of the unfolding plot. There’s a memorable cast of characters, including Greer, celebrity author David Pike, Arlo Jacks, who runs desert tours and a lunch counter out of a decommissioned bunker, and Pete Patton, who knows more than he’s telling. You’ll want to read all three volumes in the Route 66 Mystery series, though each can be read as a standalone, by this talented writer. Highly recommended.
