If you’ve ever tried to get a child to quit a nasty habit, Sally Snotgrass: It’s Snot Funny! by Alexis Macdonald may be the perfect book to give them. Sally’s story is a reminder to do the right thing even when no one is watching. Sally is a young girl who loves picking her nose and leaving boogers everywhere. It’s so bad that even the underside of her desk at school is full of boogers. One day, when she thinks no one is watching, she wipes her boogers on her friend’s brand-new coat. However, someone sees her and calls her out on it. Thus begins the name-calling and ostracization of Sally. Will she ever redeem herself?
Sally Snotgrass: It’s Snot Funny! by Alexis Macdonald encourages children to maintain good hygiene at all times, even when they think no one is watching. They might struggle like Sally, but through consistent effort, there’s no habit they can’t quit. It’s interesting to see how quickly Sally gives up nose-picking and booger-wiping when she’s caught and shunned by her peers. Unfortunately, it takes such public embarrassment to get through to her. At the same time, it is a warning for others not to wait until they are embarrassed and ostracized to give up nasty habits. I like how the illustrations aptly capture how bad Sally’s habit is, even showing boogers on her bedsheet and bedside table. This book does a lovely job of conveying a simple message on cleanliness in relatable rhythmic language.
