Leadership is Tough by Mary Kelly and Peter Stark is a leadership guide about what responsibility asks of people once other people depend on their judgment. Kelly and Stark begin with modern leadership under constant change, where decisions often arrive before every answer does, and the leader still has to give people direction. That idea carries into the way leaders treat the people around them, since everyday behavior becomes the basis for trust and determines how accountability is received. From there, the authors move inward to the leader’s own capacity, showing how isolation can alter judgment and how the use of time affects the energy available for leadership. The book then turns toward continuity, as succession planning develops future leaders before mentorship and board relationships extend leadership beyond one person’s time in the role.
Mary Kelly and Peter Stark’s Leadership is Tough is a fantastic leadership guide with the kind of seasoned judgment that speaks directly to people responsible for others. The authors have a gift for turning leadership experience into advice that feels usable the minute you read it, which comes through naturally when an executive begins walking the floor each morning. His availability changes the relationship with his team, with scores rising twenty-two points after six months. That same grounded understanding appears again in the sales director, who learns to build her team through delegation after promotion, then watches performance improve as she settles into leadership. You can tell the authors know this territory firsthand, since every example shows the assurance of people who have spent years studying what leaders actually do. I highly recommend Leadership is Tough to any reader ready to become a better leader in business today.
