Sam and James Unbridled by AA Freda follows Sam and James as they help a family torn apart by the loss of a son in 1982, in Mississippi. While in Colorado, a friend of Sam's is murdered, and a serial killer is on the loose. As they handle challenges in their business and changes on the ranch, James looks into the death of his old Vietnam friend’s son in Mississippi, hoping to find closure. At the same time, Sam learns about her friend Margo’s murder in Colorado. She takes in Margo’s boys and starts her own search for answers, wanting to keep them safe. Along the way, they rescue a girl kidnapped by the serial killer. As more victims are found in Colorado, James begins to think that Junior’s murder was not about racism, but about love, which he sees as the oldest reason for people’s actions.
AA Freda has created another suspenseful book in the Sam and James Series. Unbridled lives up to its name, with events that are hard to control. I enjoyed reading a story set before cell phones and the internet. What I enjoyed was Sam and James as the ultimate “power-couple”, influential and affluent. They exude self-confidence while also acting altruistically and caring about vulnerable youth, a theme I expect will come into play more in forthcoming books. The plot unfolds with a laid-back facade that masks the urgency of the characters who work in the background, doing all the fact-finding and legwork. Although Sam and James are successful, you can tell throughout the book that they do not take it for granted. Sam and James Unbridled is a soft crime read; there is some violence, but nothing that will upset a reader looking for something to chew on without the heart-pounding suspense of a gritty murder mystery.
