Saving the Sheriff (Three River Ranch) by Roxanne Snopek is a charming, appealing, lovable romantic story, a perfect start to getting into the Christmas spirit. Francesca “Frankie” Sylva is young, alone and a do-gooder trying to save some reindeer by loading them into a truck and saving them from being mistreated. Sheriff Red LeClair is spending Christmas alone house sitting, dog sitting, and watching over the horses at the Three River Ranch. Frankie, her trailer, car and reindeer land in a ditch on a very cold snowy night. Red comes upon the girl and knows he must do all he can to get her inside and warm before they are both stranded in the blizzard that is quickly approaching.
Red believes Frankie to be in some kind of trouble; Frankie does not want to share that she has rescued or maybe stolen the reindeer (which turn out to be endangered caribou) in an effort to protect them. The two find themselves at the ranch with no power and they have to quickly learn to get along if they want to survive the storm. In just a few days the pair quickly find themselves opening up to each other and letting go of the loneliness they both are so good at avoiding. It is a slow and sometimes painful, sometimes joyful journey to the end of their story.
I was completely pulled into the story from the very first paragraph because of the likability of both Frankie and Red. Saving the Sheriff has very little to do with Christmas, but so very much to do with love. Saving the Sheriff is a fast read of only 126 pages, but it is a story filled with perfection. Roxanne Snopek is a superb storyteller and I anxiously look forward to reading more of her books.
