Search for the Guru: Prequel to: Adventures of a Western Mystic (Volume 1) covers the author's early life. In the preface, author Peter Mt. Shasta explains the title Guru: “A teacher who leads one from ignorance to wisdom, from darkness to light. The Guru is the personification of God in daily life. The Guru is your innermost spiritual friend and the one who serves as your guide.” The first chapter begins with Peter Mt. Shasta’s rebirth; the year was 1944. Early in his childhood he knew he was a swami, although at the time he wasn’t sure what that meant. Often he would sink into a deep trance. In college he studied many philosophers but felt they “knew little about life.” The author’s search for a spiritual leader led him on quite a journey.
Search for the Guru is an autobiography but it is also so much more. Author Peter Mt. Shasta opens a window to his childhood and allows readers to look in. While he studied other religions, none of them brought satisfaction to his spirit. He continues on to discuss several other mystics. The photographs in this book enhanced the content. The descriptions of India made me want to see it personally. I found it fascinating to see the country through his eyes. I was disturbed by the use of drugs, however. Peter Mt. Shasta finds peace and oneness with nature. He has led a fascinating life.
