Tom Bankowski and his partner, Tilly, are waiting for the bus when he hears a couple of loud bangs from the room above The Trade Counter contractor shop. He runs into the building, up the stairs, and finds the place is on fire and a man is dead on the floor. Then he sees Aiden, a contractor he knows, also lying on the floor, but still alive. As he drags Aiden out of the room, he stumbles on a bunch of small stones on the floor and pockets them. Then he gets kicked in the head by another person, who escapes down the stairs. In Edd Ahearn's book, In the Shadow of Beauty, Tom not only gets Aiden to safety but discovers that the stones he pocketed are diamonds. Did he walk into some kind of criminal activity? Is his life now in danger?

Edd Ahearn seems to delight in showcasing a group of characters who are smart and caustic, colorful and delightful. During many drinking and dinner get-togethers, the banter between these characters keeps the story moving forward at a brisk pace. Tom’s character is particularly well-developed. He has a military backstory that explains why he finds himself in dangerous situations. By introducing several characters who, at the very least, are involved in questionable, if not criminal, activities, the author kept me guessing as to who the real villain could be. In the Shadow of Beauty is an action-packed adventure with a wisecracking yet endearing main character caught up in a world of corruption and murderous intrigue.

Edd Ahearn crafts a murder mystery that will keep readers turning the pages. The story is narrated in the first-person voice, capturing Tom’s perspective with unusual clarity. The voice is dry, infused with self-deprecating wit. While Tom steals the spotlight with humor and as a fully drawn hero, the supporting characters are finely drawn, including the exasperated DC Lucie Blackwood, sharp-tongued Tilly, and DI Ackermann. The bantering regulars of The Crown pub provide the novel with a comic texture, and the warmth injects realism into the story. Yet, beneath the humor, In the Shadow of Beauty skillfully explores themes of hidden double lives, deception, and greed, with crime colliding against cozy village rhythms. The action centers on stolen supercars, smuggled gems, and long-buried loot from a historic heist. This is a suspenseful thriller whose whodunit mechanics make it a page-turner; it is a character-driven crime caper with an accident-prone hero you will like.
