In Search for the Sacred Seeds by Tom Jernigan, Gloria has been different since she was a child. She always preferred things considered to be for men, and, instead of getting married, she went to university to study mechanical engineering. When she returns to her community, something horrible happens. Bonavi, who is loved and respected, is murdered. Who would murder an old man and why? In the B&B run by Gloria’s family, there are guests present when the murder occurs: Erich who discovered Bonavi’s body and reported it to the police, and a Lebanese woman who, by all accounts, is strange. Does the Hopi corn, which they consider sacred, have anything to do with the murder? How will things turn out for Erich, who is being accused of the murder?

Search for the Sacred Seeds by Tom Jernigan is wonderfully written with a fast-paced narrative that keeps one intrigued. It offers a glimpse into Indian culture, their tribes, and some of the things they hold sacred. The thought-provoking story also got me thinking about the injustices committed against the native communities by white settlers. The author utilized suspense to great effect, which made one look forward to the events of subsequent chapters. I loved how the plot flowed seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion for the reader. The reader will also appreciate the well-developed characters and the well-crafted dialogue, which add to the overall beauty of this amazing work. I look forward to reading something else by this talented author.

Search for the Sacred Seeds by Tom Jernigan is a captivating story that follows Gloria, a Hopi woman who returns home feeling like a failure. After leaving the reservation because she feels she didn’t fit in, she experiences disappointment following her failed engagement to a white man she believed was her true love. Her attempts to fit into the outside world leave her feeling lost. While managing her family's bed-and-breakfast for her vacationing parents, she meets Erich, a German who arrives with grave news about a nearby body. Together, they involve the police, who begin an investigation. Through the community's grapevine, Gloria learns that the criminals are after the sacred corn seeds her family has protected for generations. Without her parents around, Gloria teams up with Erich to stop the criminals and safeguard her family's legacy.

Search for the Sacred Seeds is a powerful narrative about soul-searching, belonging, and self-discovery. Gloria is a relatable character who feels misunderstood by her community members, who are hesitant to embrace change. She respects her traditions and history but struggles to reconcile her modern experiences with her cultural identity. Throughout the story, readers witness her embrace of contemporary society through her connection with Erich while holding on to her traditions in her determination to protect the sacred corn seeds. Tom Jernigan explores Native American culture and beliefs through the narrative, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage. The book also delves into the community's fears of embracing newcomers, which is rooted in historical trauma. This novel perfectly blends elements of mystery, cultural identity, and personal growth. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories about embracing unique identities and achieving self-acceptance.

Search for the Sacred Seeds by Tom Jernigan is a fast-paced mystery set in a remote corner of the Hopi Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona. We are introduced to Bonavi, an elderly Hopi farmer, whose quiet life is cut abruptly short. The tragic discovery of his body by a German tourist, Erich, sets the local authorities on an investigation into the mysterious death. They learn of a foreigner asking questions about their sacred corn seeds. We are also introduced to Gloria, a young Hopi woman, who, after a broken engagement, wants to reconnect with her ancestral roots and find her place in the community. When Erich and Gloria cross paths, they form a bond they hadn’t expected. Their growing bond is tested while trying to prevent the seeds at the heart of the Hopi culture and spirituality from being stolen.

Tom Jernigan uses vivid descriptions to bring the rugged beauty of the desert to life and introduce the reader to the Hopi people and their physical and spiritual connection with the land. The author intertwines the central enigma with the cultural and personal subplots of the individuals exploring their identity and belonging. The descriptions were so vivid that there were instances where I felt like I was with the characters, especially toward the end. The detailed descriptions of the Hopi traditions and culture add to the authentic feel of the narrative. The characters are well-developed and bring a unique insight to the plot. Gloria’s struggles with her identity and her determination to save the essence of her culture at all costs, combined with Erich’s vulnerability and outsider perspective, help drive the story forward. Search for the Sacred Seeds is a suspenseful novel, but it also explores the importance of the preservation of traditions and the need for each one of us to belong somewhere.
