Secrets Beneath the Ghost Gums by Jac Buchanan is an intriguing tale about a man who returns home after many years. The home he was raised in had a mysterious door that was never to be opened, and the sounds that came from the room frightened him. His mother makes him promise never to abandon, sell, or demolish the house, but immediately after telling him this, she dies. Her death is followed by that of her trusted servant Nullah, a man who had an unusual relationship with his mother. Burdened by the loss of his entire family, he tries to connect with his origins by reading his mother’s journals. What he discovers are stories about hunters, killers, and gruesome murder mysteries. The tales give him nightmares, and sounds start coming from behind the mysterious door. What could all this mean? And what could be behind the door?
The essence of a story is to make the reader feel something, and Secrets Beneath the Ghost Gums made me feel chills down my spine. The spooky nature of the story and Jac Buchanan’s writing style built suspense and kept me glued to the book. He gives subtle clues like shared birthmarks or people’s unusual behavior to create vital plot twists in the story. The story was so captivating that I read the book in a single sitting. I did not want to miss a thing because every sentence, character, and scene were important to the shocking ending. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading creepy family secret stories.
