Once readers catch on as to who is speaking in the opening of this romantic mystery, Shadow of the Forgotten, by McKenna Grey and Everly Archard, the novel evolves into quite an enjoyable read about two young people, Heather and Jordan, who meet just prior to a wedding. Cupid shoots his arrow, but before Heather and Jordan can get to know each other, the wedding is postponed rather dramatically when a couple of female members of the bridal party are murdered. Then, only hours later, Heather too comes close to losing her life, but she’s saved by Jordan. Now the mystery really gets under way, as Heather, who works for the US Marshall’s office, tries to find out who killed her friends and why. And eager to protect and help her all the way is Jordan, who has family in the FBI. When it becomes apparent that Heather, and not the other women, was the killer’s real target, the action speeds up and the authors keep readers guessing from one page to the next.
The clue to the mysterious events in this novel lies in its title, and it takes till one is nearly 5/6 of the way through the book to begin figuring out who really is behind the murders and why. And just when you think you know who it is, you get a surprise. That’s the way to do it - keep the reader hooked and reading, and thinking they have it all figured out ... only to discover that they don’t. Jordan and Heather get themselves into some pretty scary situations, and even if sometimes they seem a bit too lucky, they survive, just as readers would want. A nice bit of romance, a good deal of “whodunit” tension, and a satisfying conclusion make Shadow of the Forgotten a great read on a weekend away. Enjoy!
