In Yarrow Bend, a rural Canadian town, Sergeant Lena Malone of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and her junior, Constable Fincher, have launched an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of nine-year-old Elise, the daughter of Gustav “Goose” and Therese Deschamps. The more they dig into the case, the more unexpected discoveries they make, and the further they seem from solving it. Their first suspect is Therese. A few months earlier, she had abandoned her home for a long-distance affair in Montana, USA. It turns out her new lover is a member of the Sovereign Assembly, a doomsday cult that, as the cops soon learn, runs a tight cross-border trafficking syndicate. Therese has been in consistent contact with Elise, and Goose believes his ex-wife is behind Elise’s disappearance. Find out more in She Will Eat Me When I’m Dead by Jason Patrick Rothery.
If you are looking for a mystery flavored with drama, suspense, crime, action, dark humor, a touch of horror, and psychological thrills, She Will Eat Me When I’m Dead is a must-read. Jason Patrick Rothery is an incredibly gifted author. The story unfolds through a multi-perspective timeline, giving me insight into the developing mystery from the diverse perspectives of the well-crafted cast. Each character has a strong personality, and as they interacted, I found myself either laughing or questioning contemporary social trends and my own ethical compass. The tremendous, dramatic edge added to the narrative. Each character offers a real-world lesson about their situation. I relished the witty, introspective commentary, particularly from Elise. Her interaction with Sheldon reveals the innocence in pre-adolescent curiosity and mischief, as well as how adults often misinterpret it. I loved this read.
