Shore Trouble by David Antocci is the first book in the Ellis Kane Mystery series. When Ellis arrived in Turtle Key, Florida, he had a clear-cut plan. He was going to clear out his late uncle’s belongings and enjoy time on the beach. It would be the ideal downtime for him to decide what the next step in his life was going to be after hanging up his detective's badge. But his plans are quickly derailed as he gets dragged into the search for a missing woman when her daughter, Brooke, shows up at his door. To help her out, Kane dives into a trail of clues, going through marinas, beach bars, and straight into the world of cosmetic surgery. When he discovers the cosmetic clinic has ties to a local mobster, the mystery gets even more complicated. As he dives into the investigation, he’s pulled into a world of corruption and danger hidden underneath an idyllic backdrop.

David Antocci makes the most of the Florida setting. By cleverly incorporating eccentric locals and bizarre chaos, you get a sense of the place. These elements give the tone a quirkiness that keeps the story lighthearted, while steadily bringing the quiet strangeness to the surface as the mystery builds. You’ll get a genuine sense of the world as these details help you step into the setting alongside Kane. The noir elements surround Kane’s attitude and role as a former detective, but can also be seen in the structure and attitude of the narrative. You see things transpire before Kane does, which effectively draws you in. However, creating a nice balance to the dark underbelly is the dynamic between Kane and Brooke. Their lighthearted dynamic and chemistry begin the moment she disrupts his getaway, and it’s obvious the potential for romance is there from the start. A fast-paced and delightful introduction to Kane, Shore Trouble is a caper that takes you into a quirky and dark world of crime, mystery, and Florida weirdness.
