In Emily Pattullo’s psychological thriller, Silent as the Snow, Anna Griffin-Smith is the indulged only child of the wealthy owners of a large business that demands most of their attention. A rebellious nature and three teenage male friends her parents disapprove of lead Anna into trouble. One night, in heavy snow, Anna and her friends do the unthinkable, agreeing to keep a terrible accident secret. Then one of them is accused and sent to prison. Twenty years on, Anna and her friends are reunited following a funeral, and Anna has to finally come to terms with her past. Exposed to truths she is reluctant to acknowledge, Anna struggles to adjust to a world that is turned upside down by shocking revelations.

Emily Pattullo is an accomplished novelist. The plot is compelling, with a strong central conflict. The author takes the reader into scenes and brings the locations to life. Her characters are interesting and complex. She deals with issues that matter, prompting readers to think and feel. The writing style is unique and descriptive. Overall, this novel has all the ingredients of a first-rate psychological thriller. The author’s choice to alternate between then and now, taking readers back to Anna’s teenage years between chapters about her actions and recollections twenty years on, can be confusing at times. That said, Silent as the Snow was an enjoyable read and it left me pondering deeply the themes addressed. And isn’t that the measure of a great novel? I have no hesitation, therefore, in recommending Emily Pattullo's Silent as the Snow particularly to lovers of good psychological thrillers.
