Silent Vengeance by John Sitterly starts with the birth of a serial killer. He is an angry man and his rage consumes him. He strikes his first victim, a woman, viciously over the head with a blunt object, cracking her skull. Realizing he acted rashly, he vows that in the future he will show the world what his victims have done and take a memento from each person. He crosses the woman's name from a list in a notebook; one down, many more to follow. Steven O'Rourke is a lieutenant and chief investigator with the Albany Police Department, head of Homicide and Special Crimes unit. Called to the scene of a murder, he finds a dead man with his tongue cut out, and a graffiti-ed message on the wall. More murders follow, each displaying a similar pattern, and the team must race to find the murderer, and his next victim, before he kills again. They must first determine if these victims are connected or how they are selected? As there are no apparent connections, this makes the task so much more difficult. Can you figure it out before the police do?
Silent Vengeance by John Sitterly deals with the twisted mind of a serial killer and his early beginnings. As he grows more confident, he becomes more difficult to catch. Hunting him down is like trying to put together the pieces of a puzzle that have many pieces missing and therefore does not make sense. Why these victims, what does the graffiti mean, and how are these different victims connected? This leads you off in many directions as your mind struggles for a way to connect the dots. Can you spot something the police are missing? Silent Vengeance starts off a bit slowly, but it is worth pushing through the first few chapters as the pace picks up considerably and you find yourself really immersed in the story. The book is very well written, the characters are well defined and realistic, with the flaws and faults we all have. The book also takes a look at social issues and prejudices in the workplace and neighborhoods. An interesting read.
