In Slow Burn by Alison Sweeney, Lesley, Metrix's marketing manager, is happy with her life and her job. Lesley enjoys her freedom and has no interest in a lasting relationship. When Alex Crewe arrives as the company’s new Sales Manager, Lesley’s carefully maintained boundaries begin to blur. Despite Alex having a girlfriend, Lesley starts an affair with him that neither of them can bring themselves to end. They try to stop their affair, but the attraction between them repeatedly draws them back together. Lesley’s world is turned upside down when she learns a shocking secret. Soon her life unravels around her, and she must confront the choices she has made in the past. Lesley has no idea who she was anymore and faces the truths she spent so long denying.

Slow Burn by Alison Sweeney is complex and intriguing. Lesley’s independence is tested as she discovers she is not as happy with her life as she thought. Alex’s involvement adds tension and uncertainty to her future. The story is fast-paced but leaves the reader enough time to process everything. At times, I wished I knew what would happen next, and I was surprised every time. The writing allowed me to follow Lesley’s emotional journey, and I soon felt part of it. The book is brilliantly written, and it encouraged me to reflect on honesty, accountability, and the courage required to face truths we shy away from. The ending pulled the rug out from under me. It was totally unexpected, and I did not see it coming.
