In Smidgen, the Baseball-Loving Pigeon: Meet the Newest MVP by Sue Nichols, a pigeon family lives in a baseball stadium, with their nest built inside a baseball cap. Smidgen, the young pigeon, eagerly awaits the hatching of his sibling and spends time drawing on the egg and dreaming of baseball. His father surprises him with a personal baseball cap to use as his own nest. During a game day, Smidgen and his father attend while his mother stays behind, sensing the egg is close to hatching. She alerts them mid-game that the baby is arriving, and the family rushes back to witness the birth of Smidgen’s new sister. Smidgen gives her a surprise, unique name, embracing his role as a brother and celebrating his love for baseball with his family.
Smidgen, the Baseball-Loving Pigeon, written by Sue Nichols and illustrated by Gary Blake, is a joyful, well-written picture book with a story that charms from start to finish. Nichols’s writing flows smoothly, keeping a lively rhythm that makes reading aloud especially fun. Smidgen’s antics, like decorating an egg with blue stripes, add delightful touches and give us a better view of his personality. The illustrations, done in a classic comic strip style with a fantastic full-color palette, bring each moment to life with humor and energy. Smidgen’s world feels inviting and fun on every page. The combination of inclusive and accessible storytelling and bold, expressive artwork creates a satisfying read that’s sure to please both kids and adults. This is a book that celebrates baseball, family, and small joys with cheerful confidence. Very highly recommended.
