Death By Mail is the 23rd book in the Josiah Reynolds Mystery series by Abigail Keam. Josiah Reynolds is 50 years old, a former art history professor, and now a farm owner and beekeeper. She keeps receiving anonymous notes with death threats in her mailbox and tries to shrug them off. But when the threats escalate to property damage, affecting the farm and its resident animals, it’s time to take action. Josiah’s formidable daughter Asa shows up, along with a tactical team from her stolen art recovery operation. As they try to trace the source of the threats, they hear from lawyers representing others who have received similar threats. There’s a romantic angle as well: Josiah’s ex, Jake, is on Asa’s team, and he wants a second chance. Handsome lawyer Eli Bradley also keeps turning up. Connecting the dots, they begin to see how a quiet stretch of the Kentucky river is in the sights of a global corporation.

Death By Mail promises an entertaining murder mystery in Kentucky bluegrass country, and Abigail Keam delivers in spades. The well-reasoned plot and appealing cast of characters, with Josiah and her amiable bulldog Baby heading the list, kept me reading. Josiah’s snappy interactions with friends and enemies alike, to say nothing of her acerbic yet loving relationship with Asa, provide glimpses of varied worlds: legal boardrooms, extra-legal crime fighters, farm markets, and beekeeping. The setting, plot, and resolution are all highly authentic, and readers will pick up a good deal of historical and local knowledge along the way.
