In Jessica Hemingway's Spirit of Obsession we meet Stella McBride, a smart businesswoman who has never believed in ghosts. When she reluctantly joins her dear friend, Kathy, to attend a medium's performance, she is shocked that the medium not only picks her from the crowd but begins to share information that rattles her to the core. Unaware that the love of her life, Rhett, has died, Stella now realizes that his spirit is trying to contact her. As Stella tries her best to hang on to her real life, which includes her upcoming wedding to her dear friend and business partner, strange phenomena start to occur such as light bulbs breaking and odd voices in her living room. Fueled by her desire for Rhett, her long buried anger at his sudden disappearance to California five years earlier, and the riddles he sends her from beyond, she sets out to determine if she is truly enamored with a ghost and what that might mean. As Stella drives across the country to meet her fiancé, she finds herself detained due to a car accident. Now stranded for several days in a dull, small town hotel, she relives her memories and once again joins the spirit of Rhett who begins to shed the truth on his disappearance to California and life as Stella knows it.
Spirit of Obsession is a fast paced read that compels the reader to keep going. Stella's internal struggles of her lost love, Rhett, and the mysteries of their past contrast poignantly against her sensible need for marriage to her secure and stable fiancé. We ride along with her as she falls deeply in love again then snaps back to reality, even questioning her own sanity. The plot moves quickly and the reader often wonders what is real and what is not right up until the very end when a surprise twist captivates us once more. Jessica Hemingway's writing is skilled and brings us into Stella's surroundings and feelings, making her a likeable character that deserves true love. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories of the paranormal or, if not, enjoys an escape to a story of the power of true love.
