Spirit Out of Balance is the fifth book in The Guardians series by Tessa McFionn but can be read as a standalone novel. Centuries after his oath on the battlefield of Bouchain in 1711, Guardian Warrior Mathias Blanchett is a broken man. Rogue general León Alcaçar shattered his sword arm, nearly destroying the faith he had in himself. Then a ballerina, Alexxa Montgomery, who has lived for dance, walks into the Savannah boardroom in combat boots, and a single word echoes through Mathias’s heart: spiritmate. Alexxa is fighting battles of her own that may even destroy her ambitions: a father gone missing and a twin brother, Donovan, who has struck a bargain with the Rogues of the In-Between because of his thirst for power. Alexxa and Mathias fall hard just as old enemies close in. The fight for her heart becomes the most dangerous battle he has ever fought.
I became a fan of Tessa McFionn because of her intriguing characters and skillful storytelling. Mathias belongs to old-world chivalry, is quirky, and has a sweetness that makes him whisper “mon ange” to the woman who has captured his heart. He is your perfect alpha with the heart of a poet. Alexxa is the damsel you cannot stop reading about; she is beguilingly beautiful and fierce in her fouettés, just as she is in her devotion. The pacing is fast, racing through tender romance, sword fights, and the suspenseful path Donovan undertakes. I absolutely relished the blend of cinematic action, telepathic banter, and French endearments. Add Éamon's Irish wit to the storytelling and the warmth of the found-family of the Guardians, and you get a delightful read. The cliffhangers will leave you gasping. Spirit Out of Balance makes you believe in a world where magic is real and love truly conquers all. Now I will have to read all the books in the series.
