Sploot: Two Squirrels, One Mission is a children's book by SaDonna Heathman that follows two squirrels who are battling a scorching summer day. Perched in a tree, they discover "splooting"—sprawling flat to cool off—and soon go on a quest to find the perfect splooting spot. The squirrels try various places. They try splooting on the muddy ground and find that it is not a good fit. They also try splooting on prickly hay, and even a house floor, but none feel quite right. The other animals watch them struggle. Their adventure eventually leads them to an empty birdbath, leaving them disappointed yet hopeful. All of a sudden, they see a sign! This sign points to a potentially ideal spot, raising the question: Will they finally find a place to sploot and escape the heat? The story unfolds with humor and heart, capturing the squirrels’ determination and curiosity in a relatable, lighthearted tale.

Sploot: Two Squirrels, One Mission was very entertaining! I can imagine children laughing throughout this whole story. SaDonna Heathman blends adventure with a playful exploration of quirky animal behavior. Brooke Sperry’s colorful and fun illustrations bring the squirrels’ journey to life, with expressive characters and vivid scenes that enhance the story’s charm. The narrative feels like a mini-adventure, keeping young readers engaged as the squirrels face each humorous setback. The inclusion of fun, scientific facts about splooting at the end adds an educational layer, making it both entertaining and informative. I learned a lot about this fascinating behavior, and the lively tone and engaging visuals make this a standout choice for children and parents alike!
