Squire With Fire: Dragons Unite! by Joseph Cassis is a heartwarming adventure that follows Meili, a charming red dragon with respiratory problems. After accidentally inhaling smoke from the fields, Meili starts coughing and cancels her garden visit, but before she can return to the temple, a strong wind sweeps her away. Meili lands in a castle in Scotland, unsure of how to get back home. Fortunately, she meets Luka, a white dragon who becomes her friend, and the knights at the castle volunteer to help her find a way home. Join Meili and her new friends as they journey through Norway, India, and the Meili Mountains, learning about the different cultures along the way and the significance of her name in each region.
Squire With Fire: Dragons Unite! is a delightful story that promotes themes of friendship, adventure, cultural understanding, and environmental awareness. Inspired by the author's experience with COVID-19, the book highlights the importance of respiratory health and the need for clean air. Meili’s journey includes elements of self-discovery and acceptance. She learns that her name, which means 'beautiful' in her native Chinese language, has different meanings in other cultures; for example, in Indian Sanskrit, it means 'to unite,' and in Norwegian, it means 'lovely one.' Throughout her travels, Meili discovers that dragons exist in various regions, teaching her that, despite our differences, we are all connected by our shared environment. Joseph Cassis uses simple language and incorporates historical, geographical, and ecological lessons into the narrative. The vibrant illustrations incorporate a beautiful floral theme and vivid depictions of unique architectural styles from the various regions in the story. Overall, this is a wonderful read that deserves a place on your reading list, as it will encourage you to bravely explore the world and celebrate diverse cultures.
