What a great book! That's the first thought I had when I finished reading Stake Out by author Bonnie J. Doerr. Following the gang from her previous work, Island Sting, we again find the Keys Teens Care (KTC) group working to protect endangered species in the Florida Keys. This time, the group is investigating the theft of endangered sea turtle eggs. Kenzie, the leader of the group, isn't quite sure why someone would steal the eggs, leading to the death of the turtles, but she and the other members of KTC are determined to find out. Along with some typical teenage issues, like Kenzie's developing crush on another member of KTC, Angelo and her struggles in dealing with her mother's divorce, and strong, independent Ana's daily challenges in living with spina bifida and the need to use a wheelchair, Stake Out also provides a whole lot of mystery and adventure, perfect for the adult or young adult reader.

As I said, Stake Out is simply a great book. Author Bonnie J. Doerr is fantastic at drawing characters that the reader truly grows to love. Her description of the Florida Keys is so realistic that you'll feel as if you're actually there. The premise of this series, protecting the environment, is a very worthwhile one, but this book is not written in a "preachy" or overdone tone. I have to give the author kudos for that, as so many books with a message are not able to pull that particular feat off. I highly recommend Stake Out to any reader who enjoys a fun read that combines a little bit of romance with a whole lot of mystery, young adult or not. I certainly hope that Bonnie J. Doerr is working on her next book as we speak, because I, for one, will be eagerly waiting to read it.
