Stalked by Demons, Guarded by Angels: The Girl with the Eating Disorder by Simone Yemm is an account of the author's struggle with bulimia. Right from birth, Simone's mother laments her body size. The words she uses to describe her newly born baby will haunt Simone for the rest of her life. Simone narrates her gradual dive into self-loathing and body-shaming. She talks about the dark places her mind took her at different stages of her life, comparing herself to her siblings and feeling guilty about everything, including the death of her baby brother and her sister's troublemaking. Simone adopted an unhealthy lifestyle hoping to lose weight, but this did not work because every incident affected her, and she ate in secret and immediately gagged herself. Simone continued to spiral downward even into her adult life. When she finally had children of her own, Simone tried her best to forget her disorder, but her demons persisted.
From the haunting book cover to the flawless storytelling, I loved everything about Stalked by Demons, Guarded by Angels. Simone Yemm gives a raw and heart-wrenching account of her struggle with an eating disorder. Her story was compelling and mind-bending. Yemm mainly writes about her thoughts and feelings. Her pain was evident in every chapter. Simone is highly sensitive and is triggered by almost anything. The more I read, the more I felt at one with Simone. I anticipated how every incident would make her think or feel. When Simone started gagging, binging, purging, and cutting herself, I cried because I could sense where the story was going. I hope her story will help people struggling with similar disorders. This book will remind them that they are not alone, to love themselves, and will give them the power to live and not to wish for death.
