Stealing Time by Tilia Jacobs and Norman Birnbach narrates the fascinating tale of Tori, a teen growing up amidst the turbulent COVID-19 pandemic era, grappling with her parents’ divorce. Set in New York in 2020, Tori is getting ready to relocate to Boston with her mother. She learns why her family life is dysfunctional. Her grandfather, Victor Gold, was accused of stealing a priceless diamond years ago and was incarcerated for his role in the crime. After Victor's death, Tori's father, Bobby, becomes a broken and bitter teenager. This disrupted his adult life, marriage, and parenting. Tori time travels to New York in 1980 and interacts with the teenage version of her father. Both Bobby and Tori see this as an opportunity to right the wrongs that happened to their family. Their main objective is to thwart the jewelry theft. Unfortunately, danger is afoot! They are not the only ones searching for the diamond.
Stealing Time is an adventure-packed, exciting, and entertaining YA novel. It is fast-paced and filled with engaging and relatable characters. Tilia Jacobs and Norman Birnbach superbly cover themes like family ties, righting past wrongs, second chances, parenting, overcoming life's obstacles, time travel, differences within timelines, and self-discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed Bobby and Tori's father-daughter interactions, albeit as teenagers. There were many occasions when their witty banter made me smile. It was heartwarming watching Bobby gradually become concerned for Tori's wellbeing. It was also hilarious seeing Tori maneuver through her confusion while attempting to adjust to life in the 1980s—as well as watching Bobby grapple with Tori's explanations about life and technology in the 2020s. This novel is a fun must-read for YA and sci-fi fans. If you loved watching Back to the Future, you will enjoy this book just as much.
