Steps is a dystopian thriller by Sam A.D. In a dystopian future, overpopulation has led governments to enforce mandatory trackers called SLT on the general populace that limit a person's steps to 60000000, after which they die a painless death. In return, people have found different ways to keep their steps to a bare minimum to extend their lives. Agnes is a twenty-four-year-old roller who teams up with Aksel, a Norwegian strider, to participate in the annual Sunshine City Lottery, where the lucky participants can win unlimited steps. Meanwhile, Elio, a young hacker with an affinity for Irish dancing, unexpectedly finds love in the form of Sarita, a seventeen-year-old freefaller who is living blind. Unbeknownst to these four unlikely companions, an underlying conspiracy threatens much carnage and might change the lives of the city's inhabitants forever.
Building on a compelling premise, Sam A.D. delivers a unique and captivating tale, the likes of which I have never read before. Edgy, dark, and action-packed, Steps is the kind of book that surprises you in the best ways and leaves you wanting more. There are characters you will love and others you'll love to hate. These characters have idiosyncrasies that shape their personalities in this brutal world where life is short, and a person's survival depends on their adaptability. The author paces the plot nicely, which has its share of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged through to the end. Agnes and Aksel's friendship, Elio and Sarita's brief yet sweet romance, and Big John Sweeney were the book's highlights for me. If dystopian fiction is your jam, you will love this one!
