In Strong Girls Travel: AJ's Adventures at Indiana Dunes by Amy Friedl, AJ is a young girl eager to explore the world in all its beauty. In this adventure, AJ is visiting her cousin Charly, whom she hasn't seen in a while. She was expecting the all too familiar hanging out with one of her favorite persons, going to the mall, and chilling. However, when the two meet after a long time, Charly proposes something completely different from what AJ was expecting - a road trip to Indiana Dunes, and doing a 3-Dunes Challenge. This means hiking and long walks early in the morning, presumably in the sand. AJ is not too excited about it. She suggests a plan to stay at the house, but Charly is persistent in showing her something new and different. AJ has no other option but to go on the trip, which turns out to be one of the most amazing and beautiful trips of her life.
Amy Friedl approaches this wonderful and exciting adventure with an air of positivity and excitement. She shares the beauty of the world through approachable storytelling that transports the reader to Indiana Dunes and allows them to experience adventure almost first-hand and see some amazing places from their point of view, rather than just AJ's and Charly's. This first book in the Strong Girls Travel series does that with the clever use of cute and colorful illustrations in the form of photos by the talented Drew Clark. This book is a wholesome journey to the Indiana Dunes National Park, a story about friendships that change as people grow up, and the unexpected surprises hiding in familiar places.
