Dierdre Wolownick’s Success in 7 Steps begins with the difference between a dream and a goal. A dream can live for years as something wished for, but Wolownick’s method begins when the reader decides what the destination actually is. First comes what must be learned. The next category asks what must be acquired. Only then does the reader decide what must be done. The seven steps begin by asking readers to identify the dream that genuinely belongs to them. Investigation follows before a process is built that can continue through fear and time. Wolownick also asks readers to examine the stories inherited from childhood before deciding whether those old rules still deserve a place in the future. Each section ends with written prompts that turn the method toward the reader’s own life.

Dierdre Wolownick’s Success in 7 Steps is first-rate self-help, and Wolownick is excellent at making an enormous goal feel usable. The writing is direct and easy to use, and it's awesome that Wolownick gives readers tools so they can start applying the method straight away. My favorite section is the El Capitan schedule because Wolownick turns a 3,200-foot climb into appointments she can put on a calendar. She shows the training grids, then explains how the method returns her to the schedule after an interruption. The publishing example is just as good. Wolownick begins with a manuscript and learns each part of becoming her own publisher, speaking to community groups after practicing until the fear leaves. In short, this book is practical and motivating, and readers with a dream they keep postponing will benefit.
