Summer of Dust and Ash is the second book in the Stone and Scale series by Ana Lee. The story of Wilder continues as he faces yet another high-stakes challenge. An attack on the New Orleans Council House forces Wilder and his friends to escape to Teir. However, they soon realize that safety is relative and comes at a price. The Red War is ready to escalate, and it is the least of their problems. The very magical core of Eadar is being threatened as dragons have emerged and decided to shake things up. To make matters worse, the first rider emerges, and she is just as mysterious as the beast she rides. On the other hand, Markus plans on using the mysterious stones and making himself invincible. The race for the stones intensifies, and it is up to Wilder and his friends to navigate these challenges to protect Eadar and everyone. But can Wilder trust his abilities and himself?

Perfect for readers of Sara J. Maas and Cassandra Clare, author Ana Lee created an incredible story with fantastic characters and outstanding world-building. The narrative is perfect, and the pace is fast without making readers feel like things are rushed. The action is intense, it never stops, and the momentum keeps up until the very end. I liked Wilder and how complicated he was. He wasn’t sure about his abilities or if he was the right person to fight against such dark, powerful enemies. The addition of dragons made the story even more exciting, especially what happens toward the end with Markus and the egg. Jeselle was a mystery that I loved. Although I haven’t read the previous novel in the series, I had no issues catching up and connecting with the characters. The summary of the first novel, Red Summer, and the glossary at the end definitely helped. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
