Author Biography

I have been writing short stories to share with friends and family for many years and always enjoy exploring my creativity when putting pen to paper, so I am very excited to have the opportunity to share my love of writing with others.

I love spending time with my pet dog, a Labrador x Huntaway called Smoky, teaching her tricks and taking her for walks. We live in a small town in New Zealand near many beautiful parks and beaches. I also enjoy a bit of freelance photography in my spare time, especially if it involves taking pictures of sunsets.

Writing achievements include 'The Bronson Escapades' being a Silver Recipient of the Mom’s Choice Awards® honorary seal of excellence. 'The Wolf Cub' placing 2nd in the Royal Dragonfly Book Award Competition of 2024 in both the ‘Education’ and ‘Coffee Table & Gift Books’ categories, in addition to obtaining Honorary Mention in several others: Best Cover Design, Children’s Chapter Books, Middle Grade Fiction, and Animals/Pets (a complete list of results can be found on the Story Monsters Book Awards website). Buddy is a rescue dog, left at a shelter for days. No one seemed to want to adopt him until Luke came along. Now the two are inseparable. In Alison Bellringer’s Surprise at the Beach, Luke and Buddy spend a lot of time roaming the beach near Luke’s home. One day, Buddy finds an abandoned kitten. The two bond instantly, but Luke is determined to do the right thing and contact the owners who are identified on the kitten’s tag. But is it the right thing to do? Some homes were never meant for pets and the kitten is not happy in his home. In fact, he’s rather terrified. Will he have to stay there? Or will Buddy come to the rescue again?

Alison Bellringer’s early chapter book, Surprise at the Beach, is an endearing story about two rescued pets, a dog and a kitten. The plot begins with some backstory on how Buddy came to be Luke’s best friend. Then it moves along at a good pace as Buddy discovers the kitten and the forever home escapade is explored. The language is simple for young readers to easily follow along. There is a lot of descriptive narrative and dialogue is used effectively. Young readers will instantly feel compassion for both pets and will be cheering on Buddy as he makes his rescue more than once. Owning a pet is a big responsibility and this will help teach young readers the importance of good care, loving attention, and being respectful of the furry addition to the family. A great read.

Kirkus Review

“A man, a dog, and a kitten come together in Bellringer’s playful novella… Luke Garrick is a builder by trade who likes to take his rescue dog Buddy to the local beach; Buddy gets his kicks chasing after seagulls. One day, there is a surprise: Buddy comes across a kitten among the dunes… A fun, if minimally dramatic, tale of human and animal bonding.”

The Children's Book Review

“This heartwarming short chapter book is about the bonds that we form with the animals in our lives and that they form with one another, even after the shortest periods of time. When Luke and his rescue dog Buddy find a lost kitten at the beach, they quickly become attached to him. The only problem is that Freddie already has a family… Buddy and Luke are an endearing pair of protagonists, and readers will learn responsibility and empathy from their caring responses… Surprise at the Beach is a feel-good story for all animal-loving readers.”

Becky Rademaker: Mum

“At first glance Surprise at the Beach is a charmingly straightforward story about a builder and his rescue dog Buddy, along with their unexpected find at the local beach – a lost kitten named Freddie. The narrative follows Luke as he returns Freddie to his family, the unease he feels at leaving the kitten in a chaotic household, and the absence he and Buddy feel in their lives afterwards. When the opportunity arises to adopt the kitten for himself, Luke jumps at the chance. But will Freddie still be there when he arrives? As we dig a little deeper, there is more to the story than first meets the eye… We witness the incredible and sometimes instantaneous bond that can form between animals and their human companions. We feel with Luke the connection we have to nature and animals that calms our soul and brings so much more colour into our lives. The author also subtlety weaves into the tale the weighty responsibility it is to bring an animal into your home. The family dynamics are just as important a consideration as the environment. All in all, it is a sweet tale of lost and found, as well as the bonds we share with the animals in our lives. It fittingly ends back where the whole saga began – an afternoon at the beach!”
