When you combine a smoking hot firefighter and a spurned trophy wife you get a fire that burns hotter than any deep fried turkey disaster. Jackson and Abby were the best of friends for years. They shared their first kiss, first love, and just about every other first that two best friends turned “more” could share. Then Abby bolted. She left Sweet Texas without a word to Jackson and seven years passed before she could approach her Sweetest Mistake. Author Candis Terry knows how to infuse emotion in her dialogue. From their first tension-filled meeting to the very end, you can hear the Texas drawl as they fire off barbs, one-liners, and other quirky bits of conversation. Abby has her reasons for leaving and she’s keeping her secrets, unwilling to show her vulnerability to the seemingly volatile Jackson.
The fire still burns between Jackson and Abby, and watching them battle those feelings throughout Sweetest Mistake is as entertaining, frustrating, and heartbreaking as can be. Their half-hearted attempts at being just friends is almost comical to watch as it plays out in a small town where their lives are too entwined for distance. Candis Terry has assembled a magnificent story of young love that never died and only grew with each passing day. She lets us walk the long road back to reconciliation with Jackson and Abby, a road that was filled with harsh words, doubly harsh accusations, hidden agendas, and secret longings. But if the Sweetest Mistake shows us all one thing, it’s that it is never too late to recapture that first and enduring love.
