Evelyn M. Exley’s Cavalcade: The Nepa Republic follows Juliet Apelles, the daughter of Senator Julianus in the Republic of Nepa, who has secretly been able to become invisible for three years. Juliet has treated the ability as a curiosity until the outlawed Atmos people begin attracting attention in Nepalis, where her father condemns them as a threat to the Republic. The arrival of Noa, an Atmos woman forced into the Gladiator Games, makes Juliet curious about people she has been taught to distrust. Meanwhile, her growing relationship with Sentinel Antony places her secret closer to discovery. As Juliet learns that the Atmos possess unusual abilities resembling her own, she begins questioning where her power came from and what its discovery could mean for her.
In Cavalcade, Evelyn M. Exley delivers an inventive Christian sci-fi fantasy set in a Roman-inspired republic where machinery exists alongside codified civic law. Nepalis feels like a fully established society, especially in the Twelve Tables governing divorce, which bring its customs into everyday life. I also like how naturally technology belongs in this world, appearing as something its people already understand and use. Tettia’s private worship of the Living God makes the Christian faith unmistakable in a culture devoted to many deities. Exley gives every single character a full fleshing out, and so we totally get it when Titus leans into the republic’s class divisions by the choice to live among plebeian actors. Exley keeps the story moving as each discovery builds on Nepalis, with solid pacing and plenty of page-turning twists. Readers who are looking for a new faith-centered speculative fiction series with Roman influence are in for a treat with Exley’s imaginative setting and character-led storytelling. Very highly recommended.
