Bow Island in Cumbria is a place with unique natural beauty and historical significance. It was a hotspot for pirates and smugglers back in the day. Now? It’s a rather peaceful island where nothing much happens... At least not until recently, with Ellie Winter’s mysterious disappearance during her vacation with Dan, her husband. Dan turns to former detective Michael McLaren for help, but this quickly proves to be a tough case to crack. After all, it’s been three weeks since the incident, the island is full of places where someone might go missing, and there’s no shortage of suspects; there is, however, a critical shortage of evidence. Jo A. Hiestand’s Swept Away, part of the McLaren Mysteries series, is a tangled mystery that will test McLaren’s prowess.

Swept Away feels like an old-school whodunit, a logic puzzle with tons of red herrings, dead ends, and subtle clues. Jo A. Hiestand does a great job of catching you up to speed, so newcomers to the series won’t have any trouble following the plot. Speaking of plot, I found myself really engaged in the investigation, taking plenty of notes and questioning everything. The scenes are just long and detailed enough to immerse you and feed you clues without flooding you with too many details at once or overstaying their welcome. Also, Bow Island is an interesting setting, and I could picture myself basking in its beauty and mystique while learning about it and getting lost in the descriptions. Overall, if you’re into classic detective stories, Swept Away should make for a fine read.
