Sybilla and the Clockmaker's Secret by Nic Minnella is a fun mystery story for kids. Billie Hartley is 13, and so far, the only thing about her life that’s been strange is the antique clocks that fill her home. That is, until she crosses paths with a black cat called Lolo. Lolo is no ordinary cat, though. She’s a guardian cat with powers and a secret that’s about to change Billie’s world. Billie finds a time portal in her house, disguised as a broken clock, and together with Lolo, she finds herself embroiled in a 140-year-old mystery. Helped by Jack, an antique dealer’s son, it’s down to Billie to find a key and stop dangerous enemies from seizing control of the portal. But as the past and present collide, she realizes that there’s far more at stake—time itself could be destroyed if she can’t solve the mystery.
Sybilla and the Clockmaker's Secret by Nic Minnella is book 2 in the Guardian Cat series. I haven't read the first one, but I must say I enjoyed this one immensely. It’s an easy read, packed with adventure and action throughout. I loved the characters, who are all developed very well and wholly likable. Kids' books with animal characters are always good fun to read, and when you throw magic into the mix with a race against time to save everyone and everything, you’re onto a winning combination. This might have been written for a younger audience, but I think anyone who wants an easy story to lose themselves in will love this. The world-building is second to none, and the descriptive writing helps readers live the story, not just read words on a page. Highly enjoyable and recommended reading.
