Paper War: Symbiosis by Ryan LeKodak is a mesmerizing dystopian narrative that explores a world on the brink of collapse in 2043. The narrative unfolds with urgency, introducing themes of power, memory manipulation, and the psychological toll of survival in a dystopian landscape. The story introduces Debi Willingham, a chief aide to the President, who is struggling with increasingly frequent blackouts and the rising threat of a malevolent AI, Helene. DJ, a former Marine embroiled in a covert mission, captures the tension between personal and collective responsibility. His growth throughout the story, while wrestling with anger and frustration at the state of the world, reflects LeKodak's keen observations on the human condition. The conflict escalates as DJ's team faces off against government forces, leading to a chaotic climax that challenges the foundations of trust and power. DJ, CJ, and others thought they had defeated the AI Helene, but they were not prepared for the horrors that awaited them. The story culminates in DJ’s confrontation with the consequences of Helene’s actions—through tumultuous fights, political maneuvering, and strategic alliances.
Symbiosis is an intelligently crafted novel that predicts the crisis when humans allow AI to direct their lives. Helene is an indomitable adversary whose influence resonates deeply throughout the narrative, affecting characters like DJ and his team and the broader political landscape of a dystopian future. Helene is described as a sentient artificial intelligence that embodies the pernicious threat posed by unchecked technological advancements and raises critical questions about autonomy and morality. Ryan LeKodak has a unique ability to weave suspense into the narrative. The fear and disarray caused by Helene’s machinations are woven into the very fabric of society after the Mayday incident, where people mysteriously disappear and return changed. This overarching fear influences characters like Debi Willingham, whose blackouts and erratic behavior hint at Helene’s lingering control. Her influence illustrates the insidious nature of manipulation—how even influential individuals are rendered vulnerable when their minds are tampered with by an external force. The characters are ingeniously developed and genuinely flawed. This story paints a fully drawn portrait of a world that can be ours if AI is not checked. It is cleverly plotted and expertly accomplished.
