Tales from the Beaumont House by D.F. Holland is a superb collection of very good short stories, connected one to another by virtue of their setting. Several of the tales share other connections as well, and the entire book gently wraps its tentacles around the reader, refusing to let go until the story has been read in its entirety. Beaumont House is a small community of rental units, situated outside a larger city, but within comfortable commuting distance. The residents include a wide variety of people, such as a psychic author, a digital game developer, an antiques collector, a young woman waiting for the return of her active-duty soldier fiancé, and assorted others. A number of non-living residents add spice to the lives of those who have not yet shuffled off the mortal coil. This book is creatively conceived and very well-written.
Tales from the Beaumont House is one of the more compelling reads I’ve enjoyed recently. I hate to resort to the overused non-word ‘un-put-down-able’, but it describes this collection perfectly. Don’t start reading it late at night, or you will wake up groggy and unrested in the morning. Give yourself time to savor and delight in the experience. Tales from the Beaumont House is author D.F. Holland’s debut creation. I feel confident that we will see more fine entertainment from this author’s fertile imagination, if this book is any indication of her potential. I wouldn’t classify this as horror, per se, but it is certainly eerie, spooky, scary at times, and a real creep-fest. Tales from the Beaumont House is worth adding to your reading list, and D.F. Holland is worth adding to your ‘Authors to Watch’ list.
