The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor by Michael Mizov is a riveting blend of Gothic horror and mystery. The story takes us back to post-World War 1 England. Summoned by her father, Lottie Bradbury, daughter of Lord Thomas Bradbury, returns home after twelve years of schooling at Malvern Girls’ College. Lottie’s father expects her to marry into the affluent Winthrop family to save the Bradbury estate from bankruptcy. Lottie likes her suitor, but she feels unable to leave Bradbury Manor. In the estate’s cemetery, Lottie discovers that for centuries the fathers of the Bradbury lineage were dying in the year their sons were born, except her father. Her late mother’s diary reconfirms Lottie’s own observations of disturbing hauntings. Lottie starts looking deeper into her family’s history. But will she unravel the mysteries of Bradbury Manor?
What a breathtaking story! I could not get enough of the spine-chilling supernatural encounters that drove the storyline. Lottie’s unexpected discoveries of mysterious artifacts and ghosts, and the lives she found herself living in the time warps while at Bradbury Manor, kept me glued to the pages. On a deeper level, I appreciated how Michael Mizov pictured the prevailing concerns of the gentry and the miles the entitled nobility were prepared to go to preserve their titles and estates. I also appreciated the story’s theme of forces beyond control attempting to dictate life paths. At the same time, I loved how the darkness of Bradbury Manor contrasted with Winthrop House. I highly recommend The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor to Gothic horror and mystery fans.
