Teddy Cool Cleans Up by Paul Merry and Jan Merry is the delightful story of Teddy Cool who lived in the Land of One Hundred Hillsides. He was someone who always handled his problems very well. There was a Soap Mine where he lived and that spoiled things because the crystal clear water of the pool was all soapy and there was a lot of noise all the time. The locals who lived there in peace initially were very unhappy with the disturbance. So the residents called on Teddy Cool to find a solution to the problem. Will Teddy Cool be able to find a solution and bring back peace to the Land of One Hundred Hillsides?

The theme is adorable and it is a lovely story that speaks about the environmental hazards of having a soap mine. The problems faced by the residents living in that area have been described in detail. All parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime storytelling. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and breathe life not only into the characters but also into the scenes and give them good movement. It is a book that can also be used in read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Books with a good message or moral for kids are perfect for them to comprehend the message through a story. The relevant theme of saving the environment has been handled well by the author and it reaches out to young readers in a big way.

Environmental awareness and humanity's responsibility to preserve nature is critical to the survival of our planet. What better time to instill this notion than in childhood? In this brightly-illustrated book, the hero, Teddy Cool, sets about undoing the adverse effects of industrial development in a way that is easy for children to understand. Teddy Cool is calm and rational: a commendable role-model. Five stars.
