Teddy, Teddy, Holding Back the Dark by Levity Fox is a rhyming picture book that shows the protective power of teddy bears against anything that could lurk in the dark. Every night after Teddy and his owner, a young girl named Liv, are tucked into bed, Teddy goes to work keeping monsters away as Liv sleeps. Though hordes of goofy-looking creatures try to invade the bedroom through the closet or from beneath the bed, strong Teddy and his magic sword always push them away. Through daytime play or nighttime storms, Liv feels safe and sleeps soundly, knowing that Teddy’s protection never fails.
This is a perfect book for teddy bear fans and kids worrying about monsters that might be lurking in the dark. Levity Fox does a wonderful job of showing how Teddy confidently banishes monsters without making the monsters too scary for young readers. The illustrations throughout are vibrant, creative, and visually appealing. There is much to see, which I believe always makes a picture book more likely to be read more than once. For a book about darkness, every image is clear and colorful, taking the reader into the scary night where Teddy vanquishes enemies. Fox also writes in a way that is accessible to early readers who want to take on the challenge of reading a picture book by themselves. From a former child who utilized nightlights and monster spray to get through the night, Teddy, Teddy, Holding Back the Dark is sure to help children sleep a little sounder.
