Thank You for the Shoes by Raffaela Marie Rizzo follows the life of Michelangelo Rizzo, a young boy growing up in the rough mountains of Calabria at the turn of the twentieth century. The story traces his father’s difficult decision to leave Italy for America in search of work, setting off a chain of events that changes the family’s dynamics. The narrative shifts between Italy and the United States, illustrating the harsh realities of immigration, labor, and separation. Michele’s childhood is marked by loss, including the death of his father abroad and the struggles that follow at home. As his mother faces poverty and remarries out of necessity, Michele learns to survive on his own. The historical background of Southern Italy’s hardships and the promise of America give the story a broad scope while keeping its focus on one family’s journey.

Raffaela Marie Rizzo writes in a reflective, descriptive style that highlights memory, family history, and cultural details. The pace moves steadily, allowing scenes to develop carefully. Dialogue and narration blend to evoke a sense of oral storytelling, as if these experiences have been passed down through generations. The language often adopts a formal tone suitable for the historical setting, yet remains clear and engaging for modern readers. Thank You for the Shoes presents a family legacy and immigrant experiences that will be appreciated for their careful attention to place and tradition. The author’s focus on everyday struggles, from physical labor to emotional endurance, gives the narrative a grounded, human quality. Readers interested in ancestry, cultural identity, and early twentieth-century life will find much to relate to, especially in how the story honors the lives and choices of those who came before.

Thank You for the Shoes by Raffaela Marie Rizzo is a well-written book that takes readers on a journey through the life of Michelangelo Rizzo, who is popularly known as Michele or Mike. This book is divided into five parts, beginning with Mike’s difficult childhood in Platania, located in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Born in September 1896, Mike barely had any memory of his father, Antonio Rizzo, who traveled to America for the second time and died of a heart attack. Mike is determined to migrate to America in search of a better life and to honor his father. The author writes about Mike's struggle as a young immigrant in America, including his marriage to his first wife, Raffaela, and other moments of growth, joy, pain, and grief.

I found this book to be inspiring and full of hope. In fact, there was something to learn from every aspect of Mike’s life, especially his faith in God at the most difficult moments of his life. I commend the author for the detailed descriptions of events, which made the story engaging. I felt every bit of emotion and could picture what America was like in the early 1900s while reading. I loved the proverbs and the pictures on the last pages of this book. The writing is organized, well-paced, straightforward, and easy to comprehend. It features themes of hope, family, faith, grief, and more. I recommend Thank You for the Shoes by Raffaela Marie Rizzo to all lovers of biographical and non-fiction books.

Thank You for the Shoes: Anniversary Edition by Raffaela Marie Rizzo is a retelling of the classic American immigrant journey of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Michelangelo Rizzo was just a child in Southern Italy when his father was killed, working on a construction site in America to earn enough money to bring his entire family there. As he grew up and slowly became alienated from his mother and his new stepfather, Michele (or Mike, as he would later be known) was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps and seek a new life in the USA. In 1909, he left Platania alone to travel to the promised land, full of hope, courage, and a new set of shoes given to him by his adopted sister. Once in America, he would find struggle, poverty, and a series of seemingly never-ending tragedies. Still, he would also embrace his new country and its many and varied cultures. He would find love, happiness, and peace as he set about doing what all immigrants ultimately dream of: making a better life for his children and generations to come.

Thank You for the Shoes is a poignant, beautiful, and at times extremely painful description of the life many immigrants face when they begin again in a new land. Raffaela Marie Rizzo has compiled this story of her father’s journey as a tribute to her parents, her own children and grandchildren, and the many people who knew and loved Mike. It is incredibly timely, especially given the current furor over immigration, to remind ourselves just why people make that difficult decision. The author has done a marvelous job of exploring Mike’s character and his journey. She describes a man who loved deeply and would always choose the path of righteousness, even if that was the more difficult choice. I marveled at his ability to continue as each tragedy befell his little family. His determination to ensure that his four young daughters stayed with him was truly inspirational. I appreciated that at no time did Mike seek wealth and riches but was happy to just seek a simple life, where the necessities were available, and his family could grow in warmth and security. As the subtitle says, this was indeed the journey of an extraordinary ordinary man and his family. The author has done her father justice, and it was a pleasure to read. It is men like Mike and his fellow immigrants, from many varied cultures, who were the backbone of the United States. This story reminds us that the USA is a nation of immigrants and always has been. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
