The 6 Disciplines of Leadership: How to Run Your Company like a Tight Ship by international business leader and CEO Hessel Kaastra is a presentation on business leadership strategies for those entering general management positions or who hope to become CEOs one day. Drawn from personal experiences and insights as well as examples from business and industry, it serves as a “tutorial to help leaders quickly frame complex problems.” Six disciplines or dimensions provide a framework for guiding them through the process. These disciplines are strategy, profit and loss management, innovation and technology, people and performance, culture and teamwork, and self-deployment. CEOs must find a balance between flexibility and rigidity to lead their companies successfully. Case examples, charts and illustrations, endnotes, and an index are included.
In The 6 Disciplines of Leadership, Hessel Kaastra gives us a well-organized and insightful presentation that is both panoramic in approach and detailed in content. It identifies situations in which a CEO can enable and facilitate or hamper a company and its workforce in achieving its strategic goals and objectives. I especially appreciated the discussion on the importance of ethical leadership, workforce morale and recognition, communications, and encouraging a culture of trust and teamwork. This comprehensive treatment of business strategies, management systems, leadership approaches, real-world examples, and sound advice can benefit anyone hoping to enter positions of leadership. Charts and diagrams help to clarify the various concepts. While targeted at private sector businesses, it has clear implications for public sector organizations as well.
