The Acros Raiders: Down in Flames by Sara Tunder is a fantasy novel filled with intrigue, rebellion, and the constant threat of destruction. The Acros Raiders have unmasked a traitor amongst them and the promise of peace remains fragile. We're back with Scotty Sedgewig who is now haunted by paranoia and she struggles to trust her team as they face a brand new danger. Airships capable of massive destruction have returned, threatening to burn everything to the ground. As deception runs rampant and shifting loyalties blur the lines between friend and foe, the Raiders must race against time to stop the enemy’s devastating war machines before their rebellion is crushed. With betrayals around every corner and stakes higher than ever, will the Acros Raiders emerge victorious, or will they go down in flames?
Author Sara Tunder uses all her talents for description and pacing to bring readers a thrilling and action-packed fantasy with high stakes and unpredictable twists aplenty. I really enjoyed the combination of the interpersonal drama between members of the team as they are challenged by the wider world around them, and the characters were each drawn with great contrasts that bring different qualities out in each other - both for better and for worse! The immersive world-building is a real cinematic treat for the imagination and makes it easy to see and feel the epic scale of the conflict with vivid descriptions of airship battles and steampunk-like warfare. Pinpoint precision in the narration brings it all back to our heroes and how they feel. Overall, The Acros Raiders: Down in Flames is a great continuation of the series that I would recommend.
