The Adventures of Crimson and the Guardian is a children’s fantasy by Karen Cossey. While taking a walk in Pixie Forest, Kinsey sees a cloak on the ground and tries it on, only to see a unicorn appear. She is astonished when the unicorn introduces herself as Crimson and encourages Kinsey to help fight a river monster terrorizing a castle. Kinsey, who lacks defensive skills, manages to defeat the monster as she discovers how magical the cloak is. Crimson takes her on a series of adventures, battling Mungas, dragons, and ravenous jagotchies. They learn that the tyrannical ruler, Snake, has been carrying out his plan to dominate the kingdom. Kinsey isn’t trained as others to fight, but is determined to help bring peace to the kingdom.
The Adventures of Crimson and the Guardian is a lovely novella for children who like reading fantasy tales about elves, dwarfs and other mythical creatures. One of its main characters, Kinsey, is a smart and courageous young girl who will come to one’s rescue, even if she is afraid herself. Crimson is a caring unicorn, but is easily offended when teased. Although it’s a short read, Karen Cossey tells her adventurous tale very well. The dialogue is witty, as well as some of the deeds Kinsey and Crimson completed. Her descriptions of the monsters are great and one can visualize how repulsive they really are. The cover illustration of Crimson is nicely done to complement the entertaining story. I recommend The Adventures of Crimson and the Guardian.
