Being in elementary school is hard. If you want to hear it from someone personally, ask twins Asia and Tasia McKinley. In The Anti-Socialites Diary 1: The Awkward Beginnings by Alicia McKenzie and Tameka McKenzie, you will learn what it feels like to not fit in or not be accepted by the other fifth graders at Whitlock Elementary School. This beautifully illustrated book helps to add flavor with the diary entries that each girl makes. Twins Asia and Tasia both believed that once they turned 10 years old life would be different than it had been in the past. Boy, were they wrong. Nothing seemed to go right - from their birthday party, science project, the Halloween Boogie Down Dance Off and the State Spelling Bee to their special boy crush. What can they do to help carry the burden of this weight? Will this bad luck ever stop? Yes, there is always hope, and things do not always stay the same.

I enjoyed reading this story. During puberty it is one of the toughest times of life because children are transitioning from childhood and are beginning to come into their own. Authors Alicia McKenzie and Tameka McKenzie are on point with this book because it covers so many facets of growing up - from bullying and discovering self-worth to true friendships. This is a must-have for children from age 8, to be read with their parents or alone. This book also offers a great conversation piece for children to open up and for parents to provide the support necessary in helping them to grow and develop into healthy adults. Great job!
