The Arch Mage by James Wood is the third installment in The Ebon Knight Chronicles. The story picks up with Kelso being attacked, his house having been besieged, and Ava being taken by her eldest sister, Jesslyn, the Spider. This leads Kelso to find out why Ava's sister is so interested in taking her, but to get to the truth, he needs more answers from the Furies. Unfortunately, this group of the Sisterhood has been divided, and with Ava captured, bargaining with them could easily go south. With a meeting called among those groups who share a common interest in recovering Ava, the Dark Witch, Kelso has his hopes and his concerns. Will this gathering of many traditional enemies be successful, or will their old hatreds prevail?
James Wood has been consistent with the heightening plot and a series of events that have led readers from the first two installments to this one. The pacing is moderate, and there’s never a slow moment. He allows the story to breathe at the right moments. For example, from the time of the attack from two days earlier, Kelso mentally recalibrates and prepares to use what he knows about Ava as a bargaining chip with the Furies. The cast of characters is interesting. Readers will see where each of their loyalties truly lies. Readers should definitely read the first two installments to better enjoy their time with Kelso and Ava. The worldbuilding is phenomenal, and the fantastical elements do not disappoint. Fans of similar works, such as The Kobalos Trilogy by Ty Johnson or The Alfurian Chronicles by Aaron Hodges, will have the same appreciation for James Wood’s work.
