The Artificial Elephant by Eric J. Hull, Jake J. Hull, and C. M. Stultz is a collection of stories that explores grief, survival, loneliness, and the search for connection in a world of hardship and pain. The first story introduces Sarah, a lonely single mother of two, who creates a wooden creature for companionship. However, she soon regrets her creation when it becomes violent and abusive. We join a pair of vampire siblings fighting for survival in a world where their kind is becoming extinct, and we witness a loving mother who desperately longs to hold her three-year-old daughter, who is producing cold from her tiny body. The stories also delve into secret government projects, a playground conflict between two kids over a nest, and an artificially intelligent house missing its family. Two stories tackle themes of mourning loved ones and seeking peace after a breakup in the tranquility of snowfall. Finally, we follow Andy, a bullied boy who discovers a dark water entity, a surprising thief, and Jack, who learns a poignant truth about an old friend who once provided comfort during a difficult time.
The Artificial Elephant is a great collection of stories that blends different themes such as the supernatural, science fiction, and horror. However, it is also deeply emotional, with heartwarming elements about family and winter festivities. Eric J. Hull and his co-writers, Jake J. Hull and C.M. Stultz, will take you on emotional journeys with stories that offer empowering lessons on healing, bravery, resilience, and holding on to hope. Readers will connect with the characters, experiencing their pain of loss, heartbreak, and guilt, but will also find strength and learn to keep going from them. The stories are all engaging, with intriguing characters and unpredictable plots. For instance, one of the stories starts as a magical tale, but turns out to be a realistic story about healing and connections. The dynamic writing kept me captivated and left me wishing for more at the end of each story. Overall, this is a wonderful choice for anyone who loves interesting stories with emotional depth that explore relatable experiences.
