The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story is a mystifying supernatural drama that will leave you breathless. Daniel A. Shepard is an established stunt rider who grew up in an abusive home along with his younger brother. With a daredevil career, he intends to rescue his brother. But something strange has happened. He can’t fathom why the people around him are ignoring him as if he doesn’t exist. When he manages to spot a computer, he opens it and checks the website of their last show at Butte Silverbow County Fair, which was three weeks ago. Underneath the event listing is an isolated paragraph stating that the tragic accident and loss of team member Daniel A. Shepard from their last event has canceled the team’s next show in Salt Lake City, Utah. It adds that it has been an emotional time for everyone and that the team’s hearts go out to Daniel’s family and friends.

The Beached Ones is a journey through self-discovery and allows you to discover the things that matter without imposing the weight of oversentimentality. Its fantastic element is grounded enough for you to embrace it, and make you believe that strange things are part of what constitutes our corporeal experience. While films and novels have used the premise about ghosts with unfinished business, the plot that Colleen M. Story presents is a new angle. The characterization is excellent which is further deepened by Story’s good structure. Daniel as a protagonist comes alive in the most interesting way. His will to retrieve his brother due to a strong sense of fraternal bond generates the kind of motivation that stirs a good conflict. This book crosses fantasy with drama in a story that you will not put down until you finish the last page.
